temporary cap pain

temporary cap pain

I chipped my molar and had a temporary cap put on (no root canal) 2 weeks ago.  My tooth has been very senstive since.  I can't bit  on it and it feels just like it did when I chipped the tooth.  My dentist said this is common with a temporary cap.  My question is why will it be any different with the permanent tooth.  What's causing this ache?  If I take Motrin, I'm fine but every 6 hours I need it again.

Hi there, yes, very common with a temp crown.  You just had work done and between the drilling and shaving of the tooth, you can definitely expect this.  You'll feel better once the permanent crown is put on.

Oh, and your dentist should have told you not to chew on that temp.  You want the tooth to settle down, plus the temp could easily come off.
