tooth pain

tooth pain

I felt like a filling was loose in one of my upper molars, 2nd one past my filled wisdom tooth, so went to the dentist. It turned out to be a maybe 15 yr. old crown. He wiggled it and it came off and so did part of my tooth. He suggested putting the crown back on using 4 posts instead of 2. He said the nerve was not exposed and tooth was not cracked below the gum.
I felt a twinge of nerve pain, even with novocaine, when he blew air on the tooth without crown and when he tried to put the 4th post in. So he just put in 3 posts, 1 new one and the 2 old ones.
Everything was fine for 2 days. Now I have sometimes mild, sometimes sharp nerve pain under that tooth. It does not seem to be triggered by food or pressure. I can go hours without a twinge of pain or have 3 twinges in 5 min.
I called and he said if it is the nerve, it will get worse and he will order an extraction. I am on my 3rd day of pain--20 twinges the first day, 5 yesterday, and 10 so far today.
Thank you for any advice you can give me.

I never heard of putting so many posts in a tooth-- pins possibly (and this procedure is very outdated) but not posts. If it hasn't had root canal yet, why rush to an extraction. Perhaps a root canal procedure can help. Of course you'll need a "ost" and a new crown, but I wouldn't rush to extract the tooth ye unless it is so badly decayed that it is not restorable even with a root canal procedure. If your dentist cannot mke he situation clear to you, you should get another opinion.
