Depending on the type of extraction and where the tooth was positioned, a large hole may be normal.  It'll take a few weeks for the hole to completely close.  Meanwhile, definitely follow the instructions give by your doctor and baby the socket.  As it heals, the hole will gradually close up and fill up with bone and gum.

A hole is normal and to be expected.
My concern would be that if you can see the hole then there isn't a healthy blood clot formed over it (which could lead to a lot of pain).
There shouldn't be too many surprises.  The hole will heal over in time.

If you do start to experience pain then I would suggest you contact your dentist as you may have a dry socket.  An infection could also be a possibility.

Follow the instructions your dentist gave you and if you have any concerns ring them.

Good luck!  I hope all goes well.
