Addition of Wellbutrin to Effexor

Addition of Wellbutrin to Effexor

Due to Effexor's sexual side effects, my doctor added Wellbutrin, 75mg/day.  I'm not sure if I'd call it a world of difference, but anything is better than nothing. I saw one of your replies to someone where it says that wellbutrin "SR" (I guess the extended release type) is sometimes used to reduce the sexual dysfunction side effects of effexor.  The wellbutrin I have is just plain "wellbutrin"--not an extended release type. Could I expect better results with the extended release wellbutrin?  Is there a major difference?  My effexor is 75mg extended release.

Pat,

The difference between Wellbutrin SR and Wellbutrin is that the SR(sustained release) only needs to be administered 1-2 times daily as opposed to the other form which requires 3 daily doses.  I generally only prescribe the SR form because its more convienent; they are both the same drug (equally effective). There is no evidence to say that the SR form works any better to treat sexual dysfunction but it may be worth a trial.

But my presription is for one 75mg tablet of Wellbutrin a day.  You say that the normal dose of regular wellbutrin should be 3 times a day.  Should I mention to my doctor that maybe we should go to the SR form, if once a day is the frequency?  Am I messing myself up by taking one regular wellbutrin a day, i.e., dosing "up and down"?
