After effects of Schizophernia

My Brother is suffering from Schizophernia from the past 3 years. He has been undergoing medication since then.

Now, he no longer believes in all the delusions he used to have. But, he has started to sleep for more than 16 hours a day. On being asked, he says that it is because the the medication that is being given to him causes him to sleep this much. Also, he takes bath very occasionally.. only on being coerced.
Earler he was not like this. Infact he was very opposite of this.

Can some, who has taken care or a schizophernia patent tell us that, that has he also observed this ? if so, how did he take convince the patient not to sleep excessively.

Rahul,

     What you are describing may be negative symptoms of Schizophrenia.  Limited facial expression, decreased motivation, social isolation/ withdrawal and the inability to experience pleasure are negative symptoms.  Some ot the newer antipsychotic agents are better at treating these symptoms of schizophrenia than the older medications.  If possible the medication that your brother is taking could be given all at bedtime to minimize daytime sedation; this depends on the type of medication he is taking and should be discussed with the treating psychiatrist prior to any changes.  I hope this is helpful.

I have been a schizo for about 6 years and i am 18 know and at first i was scared and i didn,t know what to do and now i think i have ahold of it. So Raul tell your brother that it will be scary for the first 3 or four years but he will get used to it and it won't be that scary.
