Alternatives to ECT?

Several months ago I read an article about a successful alternative to ECT.  It was about stimulation of the brain by placing electrodes (?) on the patients' face and head, I believe.  The treatment had been very successful.  I believe, though I may be incorrect, that the treatment had been remarkably successful and was undertaken at two medical schools - the Medical University of South Carolina and Baylor University, though I may be incorrect. Do you know about this?  Can you give me the name of the treatment and where it has been conducted?  Thank you.

Sam,

I believe what you are refering to is ECT(electroconvulsive therapy) with alternative electrode placement.  Other somatic treatments with a possible application/treatment of depression is TMS(transcranial magnetic stimulation) which involves the positioning of magnets over the head leading to a vague mechanism of action.  TMS is still in experimental mode at present and not available for general use. Please keep in mind that ECT is still the most effective treatment for depression and is very safe.  I hope this was helpful.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
