Anxiety and Celexa

I was on Paxil for about 1yr., due to generalized anxiety/nervousness.  I felt I was doing much better, so I slowly weaned off of it.  However, coming off of it was terrible. I felt shooting(stabbing pains)in my eyes whenever I looked to the left or right. I just felt miserable all around.

Anyway, my question is this:  I am just now starting Celexa, prescribed by my doctor, since Paxil didn't work.  He said that Celexa will help control my anxiety and nervousness.  I thought though that Celexa was for depression?  Will this drug REALLY help my anxiety and nervousness???

Dear Licorace,
I would suggest you use st. john's wort which is a herbal over the counter medicine that relieves anxiety and depression. This product takes longer to work but is not chemically produced nor as expensive as most prescriptions that most be filled out by a doctor which also costs money. If you can afford it I would suggest prozac which is very helpful in reducing anxiety or effexor.  I would not suggest sleeping induced medicines due to their addictive risk factors for a child who is just learning how to grow, learn, and be responsible... aswell as a child who you have not described as having a sleeping disorder due to anxiety. Prozac helps but I would use a herbal medicine first and if that does not work then I would ask a psychiatrist or research much further on medicinal solutions for children. If your child who is not under your authority expresses further worries and complains almost daily of his or her anxiety I would mention that to his or her psychiatrist or caretaker without asking them to provide you with further information. I would also suggest yoga techniques, healthy eating and excercise, and practicing self-awareness and mental well being through positive thinking and mindfullness. To find the underlying cause of your anxieties beyond ones stressful daily activities which most human beings have to deal with everyday will also help benefit you and your child other then medication. Drugs can only help but they can not resolve or vanquish the problam...self-will, determination to be mindful and healthy and happy, coping techniques for anxiety inducing situations or cronique anxiety, growth, living in the moment not in the past or the future, doing what makes you happy so others around you will learn from you and be happy because you are happy. I am against giving prescriptions to young children because they have not fully developed yet and who knows what drugs can do to stunt that even if the short term effects or initially good. Doctors don't always know the answers and today psychology and prescription drugs are a new reveltion to are problems but is it really the answer. I would try everything else before you prescribe your kid something that might most importantly be against someone elses will. Do your research and you will know what you think and feel is right for your child. If you feel skeptical don't do it unless you are at your last leg with the problam and your child is too. Do what your child needs not what you need for your child. Communication is the key to understanding so talk to him or her before you make a decision for them and give them the necessary info you have received and learned and then ask questions and just listen...then you will truly know what is best for you and for your child.  by the way, congrats on helping yourself.

My anxiety comes out at night, due to trauma I have experienced. Probably Post-traumatic stress disorder.  I have tried everything to sleep and get rid of this obsessive anxiety.  The only thing that works immediately is Ativan 5mg. very small dose.  It could become addictive, so I take it as needed prn. Dr's orders.  It's helped a great deal.  I am wondering what anyone out there would recommend for a child 13 yrs. old for anxiety.  I do not believe doctors would use Ativan on a child  who has overwhelming anxiety, but what is out there that is good? My child does not live with me and I am not allowed to talk to his doctor or caretakers.

Dear Please help,
Sorry new to this site, I had similer problems with not having the money to get help. I knew I was depressed and left it go too long. While trying to get into a business school here in pa, I went to the ovr office to see if I  was eligible and could get funding from them for this. I had to fill out forms on medical history etc. When I got to the part about whether I was depressed or not I broke down cause I knew I was and didnt know what to write down since I didnt go to the dr's. That's when he told me to contact the mental health services here in pa. They sent me to counciling through the home nursing agency. (group counciling). I then got samples of meds from them for anxiety and depression. Since I didnt have insurance the state paid the bill till I got put on medical assistance. Since I have kids under the age of 18 in the house, the kids now have insurance and so do I. Now granted I still cant get perscriptions cause of my child support and the income I get for school. But at least I got the help I needed to get me a little better so I could start my class. I had alot of mind racing and negative thoughts going on and would just cry all day long because of this negativity. And believe me talking to people in these groups made all the difference in the world. Made me realize that this can be over come. I was a real mess.

Dear "pleasehelp"

I have come across your thread a month after you have posted, and I hope you have found an answer already.  But, if you havent, I would love to offer my thoughts and possible solutions to your problems.

I too have feelings of depression, etc. and have taken a couple of different anti depressants, and have seen a doctor/psychiatrist, etc for these problems.  I do know what its like to have problems and not have money to pay for it.

I dont know what state you live in, but in Michigan if you are below a certain income level and have children (I think you said you have 3), you can apply for a state assistance medical card.  I realize some people dont want to go to the state for help, but for the sake of your sanity and for your children, please go to your social services/family independence agency and see if they can help you out.  Tell them your situation, and if you are lucky, you may even have a sympathetic worker who knows of other programs you could use.  Also, try calling your local Health Department.  Sometimes they offer programs that provide free visits to a Catholic or Lutheran Social Services.  Even having someone to talk to helps a lot.

I realize you said you dont have insurance and cant afford to see a doctor but my strong feelings about this are:  Your life and your childrens lives and happiness are much more important than finances.  Go get the help you need and worry about the money later.  Chances are, if you and your doctor succeed in solving your problems of depression, the money issue wont seem so bad. =)

I have been there, I know having children is a very big job, I have 2 myself.  ( 5 yrs and 6 months)  I love them dearly.  But, I was a bear to live with until 2 yrs ago, when I started going to a counselor and taking an antidepressant.  I wish I would have done it much sooner.  My husband, sons, and most importantly, me.... we are all living happier lives since I went for help.

If you need someone to talk to or need any further help, feel free to email me at ***@****

Good Luck and God Bless,
Maureen

Be careful of withdrawal symptoms of Celexa if you ever need to stop taking it!  Please do your research beforehand.. I am trying to stop taking Celexa and am having a hard time doing so.  Celexa worked wonders for me for 2 yrs, but then stopped working or started doing something else and I stopped.  It isnt fun.

Just thought Id put my 2 cents in...  =)
Good Luck!

It is supposed to do that, and it is a little safer than Paxil, for just the reasons you described, Paxil is hard to get off of because it is so short acting, and rebound pains are common. That is not true for Celexa.
