Bipolar Diagnosis

My diagnosis was just changed from bipolar II to Bipolar I most recent episode mixed, how common is this? What causes the change and what are the implications?  Thanx for your help

    Bipolar disorder has been covered extensively in this forum and I suggest that you search the archives using bipolar disorder as a keyword. Bipolar disorder occurs in approximately 1% of the population with bipolar I more common than II.  Approximately 10% of those initially diagnosed with I will change into II.  The main difference between the two disorders is hypomania(elevated mood but sill able to function) and mania(marked impairment in functioning).
