Blood tests

P. S.

Is there a blood test to determine how much seratonin you have?  Or do we have to rely SOLELY on a doctor's subjective opinions of the patient's mental state?

Wouldn't a T4 test for thyroid be better than a TSH test?

Daisy,

TSH(thyroid stimulating horomone), is the most sensitive screening test for thyroid disorders.  T4 is a confirmatory test that is used if there is an abnormality with the TSH.
Serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked with depression, can be quatified by a blood test but it is not done in clinical practice  since depression is readily recognized and we are not sure what specific serotonin levels mean.  I suggest that you have a psychiatric evaluation to further clarify this issue.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
