Brain confusion? Just read- too hard to explain on one line.

I have had several instances in my life starting about 12 years ago where I guess I feel  like I'm am witnessing what I am doing instead of doing it.  My views of like a room are different, but I can't explain how.
I just read a post somewhere that descibed it like I just did.  I am a 2.00D myope, and this occured most of the time while not wearing my glasses.
The latest time it happened it was like for a whole week, and was strange and depressing.  I recently had a CT scan for something unrelated (asymetrical pupils) and everything was ok.
Does this make sense to anyone?

Dear Brad,
I have very little history to go by in terms of your symptoms, however, what you are describing sounds like it could be a depersonalization type phenomena.  Depersonalization is the feeling that one's body or one's personal self is strange or unreal.  People may feel that they are mechanical, in a dream or detached from their bodies.
As an occasional experience, depersonalization is not an uncommon phenomenon, and not necessarily pathological.  Transient depersonalization may occur in as much as 70% of a given population.  Depersonalization disorder is characterized by persistent or recurrent experiences of feeling detached from, and as if one is an outside observer of one's own mental processes or body(feeling like in a dream).  During the experience, reality testing is intact.
Depersonalization can occur as a symptom in numerous conditions, including neurological disorders(warranting neurological evaluation), toxic and metabolic disorders, other mental disorders and drug use.  I would recommend, if you have not already, to address this symptom with your medical doctor.  I would also recommend that you see a mental health professional who can take a more thorough history and accurately diagnose and give treatment as needed.
I hope that this information has been helpful to you.  It is provided for educational purposes only and should not replace consultation with your physician.  If you wish to follow up with a mental heath professional from Henry Ford Hospital, call 1-313-874-6680 for an appointment.
