CELEXA

Hi,  I have been taking Celexa (20)  for almost 2 weeks now for depression and I have been waking up in the middle of the night biting down extremely hard.  Is this common?  I have really hurt the back sides of my tongue by doing this.  Should I maybe try and change medications?  I do believe that it is the medication because I have never done this before.  Also, I am sleepy all of the time now.

Dear M.W.
Celexa (citalopram) is a newer SSRI that is used in the treatment of depression. It is a relatively well tolerated medication with few side effects. The most frequent adverse events reported with Celexa are nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, insomnia, increased sweating etc. There are occasional reports of teeth grinding which may intern cause tongue biting. It is important to rule out other causes for tongue biting. I would recommend that you talk to your doctor in detail about your concern and discuss about the options that are available. Good luck

Sincerely
