Celexa and alcohol

Celexa and alcohol

I have been taking Celexa 20mg. since April 1, 1999. I have had some short dizzy spells but 2 that have really scared me.  Both times I had been drinking heavily the night before. The most recent spell happened on Aug. 16 and has not gone away completely yet.  I get a feeling as if my equilibrium is off and headaches also. Could this be from the Celexa?  I never had this happen while I was on Zoloft.  I am not  an alcoholic but just got carried away at a birthday party. I am truly afraid that I might have permanent brain damage because this feeling won't go away. Should I ask my doctor to change my medication?  Please respond as soon as possible. Thanks.

Dear Kim,

Celexa or citalopram HBr is an orally administered selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant indicated for the treatment of depression. Trials conducted by the manufacturer on normal subjects did not worsen the cognitive and motor effects of alcohol when taken with Celexa, but as with other psychiatric medications, the use of alcohol by depressed patients taking Celexa is not recommended.

I am concerned about the equilibrium being off and the fact that the headaches have lasted this long. This may have some physical basis other than alcohol or Celexa, eg. ear infection. I suggest that you consult your physician for a reassessment.

I have been taking celexa for 3 months and I drink around 3 times a week, always attaining a "buzz". Now this "buzz" is the same as before I was taking the medication. Why is it recomended not to drink while on this drug? Could you tell me of other side effects from this drug? Also my R.E.M. while sleeping has become more vivid. Is it possible that the drug can make me dream in a different way. How is taking this drug for the next nine months going to "impove" my life?
