Celexa

After seeing a counselor for some months, I was referred to my primary care for possible medication.  I just started on Celexa, which was prescribed for me after I described myself as having a low level of depression; I can function well, but don't find myself enjoying anything, and that I find the degree to which I am absorbed in analyzing and discussing my feelings and thoughts somewhat, well, repulsive.  I can remember when I didn't use to think or focus on myself that much.  My question-will Celexa work, and how well? I'm not sure what I should feel after taking it.

Dear John,
Celexa (Citalopram) is the newest drug among the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). It is indicated for the treatment of depression and considering thatit is a newly approved aproduct, there has not been a lot of studies on its use in other psychiatric disorders. It may have the efficacy in Panic Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder llike the other SSRIs. In clinical studies, SSRIs improve not only depressive symptoms but also anger and hostility in some patients. Patients are ussually started on 20mg/day and increased to 40mg /day as needed. Although some patients may require a dose of 60mg/day., studies done have not been able to show efficacy of 60mg/day over 40mg/day of Celexa. The most common side effects are dry mouth, sedation, nausea, and insomnia among others.
