Chest discomfort and stress

Posted By Tim on April 16, 1999 at 11:37:00
I'm a 38 year old white male in pretty good physical condition.  I suffer pretty consistant stress from my job (Army Officer).  In the past five years I've experienced what has been termed "atypical chest pain" which the Army physicians attribute to stress.  The recommendation I receive is "you need to reduce your stress."  What they fail to tell me is HOW.
I quite often feel overwhelmed (almost a hopeless feeling) when I am at work.  When I think about my job away from the workplace, I feel anxious and sometimes experience twinges of pain in my chest.  The pain never radiates to my left arm or into my neck; it's just a mild discomfort that doesn't last long.
I'm concerned that the military medical system isn't set up to deal with stress related symptoms without negatively affecting one's career.  Do you have any suggestions on where to seek assistance in dealing with my stress?
