Child's Short-Term Memory Loss

Child's Short-Term Memory Loss

I have a student in my class of third graders who seems to suffer from short-term memory loss.  This affects all subjects.  He does well at math flash cards because he adds the numbers in his head and gets the right answer.  But if he needs to memorize something--no matter how easy--he can't.  For instance, he can't remember his own birthday, though it has been taught to him.

Are there treatments for children who suffer from short-term memory loss?

Dear PCarlson,

Short term memory loss is rare in young children. It is very difficult to comment on the cause or treatment without proper evaluation and possibly neuropsychological testing.  Possible causes could be developmental or acquired.
I recommend you discuss your concerns with the child's parents. The earlier the intervention the more likely a better prognosis.
Best Wishes.

Sincerely,
