Coming off Paxil

Coming off Paxil

I tried to discontinue Paxil once before and
had severe dizziness.  I consulted with my
doctor and decided to keep taking the medicine.
I would like to discontinue now and would appreciate
any information you have on how to do this.

Dear Mike,
Paxil is an antidepressant, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.  When the SSRI's are stopped suddenly, one can experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, including dizziness, headache and nausea among others.  These symptoms may be similar to those that are experienced when first starting the medication.
Typically, the standard method of discontinuing Paxil would be to slowly taper the medication over a period of time(whether it would be over a week or a month would depend on your dose) under the supervision of your physician.  I would recommend that you discuss with your physician your interest in stopping the medication before doing so, so that you can work together on the best plan for you.
I hope that this information has been helpful for you.  This information is for educational purposes only and should not take the place of consultation with your physician.  If you wish to see a mental health professional at Henry Ford Hospital please call 1-248-689-7476.
