Concentration and Drowsiness

Posted by Matt  on June 27, 1999 at 01:47:31
I've been clinically depressed for a year and a half now and often experience extreme drowsiness when trying to concentrate, especially when reading critically.  This problem began with the onset of my depression so I know it's related.  Moreover, the problem was more frequent in the intial stages of my depression when the illness was more severe and exacerbated by the many books I had to read and papers I had to write in my last year of college.  If possible, could you offer me some insight into why this is happening.
Thank you,
Matt

Dear Matt,
Your symptoms of drowsiness and poor concentration are two of the neurovegetative signs of depression.  Other signs include, poor interest in activities, low energy, sense of worthlessness and/or hopelessness, changes in appetite, psychomotor retardation, irritability, decreased sexual desire and in some cases suicidal thoughts.
I am unsure if you are currently under psychiatric care, but recommend it highly if you are not. Medication is available that may help lessen or aleviate your symptoms.

Always consult your physician.
Sincerly,
