Diagnosis

Hi Dr. Gould!
My daughter-in-law. After so many problems with her, final straw cheating. Supposedly went to psychiatrist. In 45 min., he diagnosed Bi-Polar, Alcoholism & uncontrollable anger. She's to take medication & she will be like a new person in a month (?). I believe she's again lying, etc. & pulling a scam on my son & her parents. Don't they have to do testing, etc. in order to make a correct diagnosis? And, doesn't it take a while before they find the correct medication & doses? She has mentioned, in the past, a doctor told her she had Borderline Personality Disorder (which she fits to a T). This from the doctor she spoke to when she took her oldest, a son, for ADHD. Aren't these different types of problems & doesn't this sound just a little bit too simple? I am worried for my son (so forgiving, sympathetic, enabler) and, most importantly, the children. Can you tell me how this all sounds to you? Thanking you in advance for your help.

Your real worry is about the character and values of your daughter in law,and that is the issue you need to focus on, not the diagnosis.  Any one of the diagnoses you mentioned is roughly the same descriptively, and all are treated roughly the same, and all suggest that your daughter in law has a lot of psychological work to do, and if she does it, the issues of character might change for the better. But you are right to be worried.

I had depression many years ago. The thing is - my daughter-in-law has never had signs of being clinically depressed. This is the main concern I have with the Bi-Polar diagnosis. And, from what I'm reading everywhere, people who have Bi-Polar usually have other problems as well. I'm confused about her being alcoholic because she doesn't drink, but she does have a major anger problem. I hope we do see some kind of miracle, but, at this point, after years of her pulling all kinds of things, I'm not ready to jump right back into all of it.

Thank you for your help & response.
