ETOH abuse

Posted by Tess on May 01, 1999 at 01:23:08
I am starting a nursing program, and one of my patients has been diagnosed with dementia secondary to ETOH abuse.
Can you please tell me what ETOH means?
Thank You.

Dear Tess,
ETOH stands for ethanol.  It is a common term used in medical histories to designate alcoholic beverages.  When combined in the term 'ETOH abuse', it usually refers to a patient's history of over consumption of alcoholic beverages such as beer or hard liquor.
