Elderly dimentia(dementia)

Elderly dimentia(dementia)

My Mom is 92 years old.  Has been living on her own in Elderly housing for 20 years.  Her dementia consisted of repeating and repeating, forgetting who visited, etc. but went throughout her normal activities w/some services very well and very happiy.  Always knew us but was starting to forget other people but after prompting she would be ok.

3 weeks ago she developed a very severe resistant UTI and then got c-dift (not sure how to spell that).  Anyway ended up dilusional, confused, etc. and then went to the hospital with dehydration, etc.  She is back home with me now but her mental capacity is severely dimenished.  At times she knows nothing and then at times she ok.  The nights are horrible.  Wide eyed, dilusional.  I am at my wits end because she just checks out.  I am pursuing more infection but in the meantime any suggestions - sleep aides, causes, etc.

When I give her a sleep aide she sleeps but very restless - talking and moaning all night.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Sincerely, Joan

a brief illness like that can cause a massive regression in mental state...but it can be temporary. If this lasts longer you may have to place her in an advanced care setting where she can be taken care of...sleep medications are tricky because they add confusion so if use any, use only small doses of short acting ones like ambien.

Has your mother had Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 levels checked. Many  elderly people do not produce enough of these vitamins and this can produce signs of dementia. Check out the website www.doctoryourself.com. Vitamin C is also a great healer in large divided doses and may work to prevent future UTI's. Look into niacin or niacinamide for relaxation at night.
Aricept is also a medication that sometimes helps with the forgetflness.
Good Luck,
Tropin
