Exagerated Startle Response

Exagerated Startle Response

I have a very upsetting problem.  When anyone enters the room, the house without my knowing, comes up behind me, I jump about out of my skin.  My heart races, I jump, I scream, am so afraid.  I don't have any reason to think that it is post-traumatic stress syndrome, as I don't recall any occurrences in the past that would cause this now.  I am just jumpy.  My boyfriend is now in the habit of clearing his throat before he comes into a room that I am in because he knows if he does not what the consequences will be.  Sometimes it scares me so badly that I am almost in tears.  What in the world is wrong with me and what can I do to correct it?  Would Xanax help?

Karen,

Exagerated startle response is only one symptom of PTSD and several other anxiety disorders.  It very difficult to say why you are having this problem without further information.  It may suggest an anxiety disorder and I recommend that you have a formal psychiatric evaluation to clarify this problem.  It is clear that it is significantly distressing.  I would refrain from using any medication until you have a better idea of the problem.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
