Having children etc.

Having children etc.

My wife has a mild psychotic condition and has had anxiety attacks in the past. Her doctor put her on Haladol(spelling?) and might change to Risperdol(sp.?). She is on cogentin for the side effects. I have heard different opinions as to the safety of having children while she is on the medication(both the safety of herself and the safety of the child). Could you please give me some more information on this topic and refer me to any information? I really appreciate it. Thanks alot.

Ben,

Haldol and Risperdal are both antipsychotic medications used for a number of psychiatric conditions.  Haldol and Risperdal have been studied in regards to pregnancy to a similar extent. They are both classified as pregnancy category C which means uncertain safety; animal studies show some adverse effects but no human studies have been completed. This information has been obtained from the 1999 Physician Desk Reference.
I strongly suggest that you discuss this issue further with your wifes physician/obstetrician.  The risks and benefits of taking vs not taking the medication need to be weighed.  Good luck.  Remember this information is intended for general educational purposes only.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
