Help!!!

I have a bad temper and always seem to be angry. A few years ago when I was in the Navy, I was told I had BPD but was never treated for it! Now that I have turned 28, my temper has gotten even worse. I'm in danger of losing my wife and don't know what to do. What can I do?

John,

You report being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and have a temper problem which can be a characteristic of this disorder.  This problem is jeopardizing your relationship with your wife.  I suggest that you have a psychiatric evaluation to clarify your condition.  It will also be important to include your wife in treatment and you should consider marital therapy.  Psychotherapy and sometimes medication can help.
Keep in mind that this information is intended for educational purposes only.  Please follow up with your personal physician for specific issues.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM

Try cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)   antidepressants (yes, antidepressants!).  CBT is often used in our clinic to treat road rage, and BPD (if that's what you have) can also be managed with CBT.  Manerix (moclobemide, 150mg bid) and Zoloft (sertraline, 50-100mg) can also be used to control anger (though Manerix may be better for your sex life).  In any case, see a doc for referral to a good psychologist (since the drugs work best in conjunction with CBT).  Trust me, you can beat this!
