Hypochondriasis

Hi- I am a 35 year old female on 200 mg. Luvox for OCD (hypochondriasis) The med has helped me return to just about normal.  Do you think I should still go to therapy 2X per month?  I have come to acknowledge my hypochondriasis is a result of deep seeded guilt about past events in my life (dropping out of college Sr. year).  Is therapy helpful for OCD?

Dear Julie, It sounds as though you have had improvement in regards to OCD with Luvox.  Psychotherapy can be very beneficial in OCD.  Behavioral therapy is used in OCD to help deal with obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.  I do not know what your specific symptoms are, although it sounds that they may deal with hypochondriacal thoughts.  If you have been going to therapy two times a month, I would discuss with your therapist the frequency of your visits to jointly decide what frequency is best for you.  It sounds like what you have been doing has worked very well for you.
I hope that this information has been helpful for you.  It is intended for educational purposes only and should not replace consultation with your physician.  If you would like to see a mental health professional at Henry Ford Hospital, please call 248-689-7476.
