Laxatives--Abuse and Addiction

  For years I have taken laxatives as a means of weight control and now have realized I'm totally dependent on them. I was in therapy for several yrs for PTSD and found this particular subject very difficult to talk about. Now, I guess I need to know what kind of damage can be done for overuse. I've noticed if I try and go a day without any, I have significant swelling in my legs and palpitations. How does one quit taking them, if you have the symptons mentioned above?

It is good to hear that you want to get away from using laxatives for weight control.  Chronic usage of laxatives can cause decreased potassium levels in the blood.  The palpitations that you experience may be due to having low potassium levels.  Another symptom you can experience is weakness in your legs.  The swelling in your legs could be secondary to the laxatives or there could be another medical condition present.  I advise you to see your medical doctor immediately to prevent and treat any further complications.  Do not be hesitant about revealing to your doctor that you use laxatives since your doctor needs to know your complete history in order to help you best.  You will need your primary care doctor to help you reduce your laxative use, as well as a mental health professional.
