Lexapro and beta blocker interaction

Lexapro and beta blocker interaction

I am taking Xanax .25 mg 3 times per day, Toprol XL 25 mg per day (beta blocker) and have just increased my dose of Lexapro from 5 mg per day to 10 mg per day.  When I increased the Lexapro, I noticed I started having heart palpitations.  Is this normal with Lexapro?  I also feel a lot more nervous.  I've also noticed that my heart rate has gone down really low.  My heart rate normally stays around 60 bpm resting because I'm on beta blockers.  But now, I've found it being around 48 bpm resting (in the past couple days since I increased the Lexapro).  Does Lexapro slow your heart?  Does it have an interaction with Xanax or Toprol that could slow my heart rate down too low?  I'm really scared.  I'm afraid to leave my house because I'm afraid I'm going to collapse.  I'm also afraid that I'm going to die in the night because my heart will go down too low.  Since I increased the Lexapro, I'm waking up in the night scared.  I really want to quit it, but I can't get hold of my psychiatrist (he only works 2 days a week).  I'm wondering if the long-term solution for me is to get off Xanax and take Lexapro and then get off the beta blocker when my anxiety is better.  Or, I don't know if I should just stay on the beta blocker long-term.  The only reason I take the beta-blocker is for anxiety-related PACs, PVCs and tachycardia.  It really helps with all this.  Any advice you could give me would really help.

I think you have already answered your own question. The Lexapro is a stimulant for you which means you are stimulating your heart to go faster at the same time you are trying to slow it down with Lexapro.  It doesn't make sense.  I am always weary of these kind of combinations of multiple medications, especially if you are having heart rhythm concerns.  I think you need more guidance from your cardiologist but it sounds to me as the beta blockers is what you want to keep, and you should get off the other two.

I too was on a beta-blocker and Lexapro. I was taking 20 mgs of Lexapro and started having PVCs again, in addition to it lowering my BP to 90/45. I weaned off the Lexapro SLOWLY, and still went thru horrible withdrawals. I am still on the beta-blocker (Nadolol), and no more andi-D's. BP is normal, PVCs are gone. Hope this helps you.
