Low selfesteem and sexual dysfunction

Does low selfesteem have anything to do with sexual desire? I have been on prozac for about eight months and have no desire at all. I don`t sleep at night. This is constantly on my mind and it is wearing me out emotionally. Can you give me any help?I am  currently seeing a Doctor but he gives me no information, only a prescription. Needless to say this is not to comforting. Thank you, I will wait for your answer.

Dear Carolyn,

People suffering from  depression  can  have low sexual desire secondary to decreased energy, loss of interest in activities, low self esteem,  feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness. Unfortunately, antidepressants such as SSRI's (Serotonin-Specific Reuptake Inhibitors)  -prozac, zoloft etc were found to adversely affect sexual functioning. Antidepressants such as Remeron, Serzone, Effexor were found to have minimal effects on sexual functioning.

I would recommend that you discuss your concerns with a psychiatrist in detail about the options that are available. Good luck
