Medications and pregnancy

I have had persistant nausea for 2 years.  I have tried 20 some medications and only 2 have worked for me.  Prochlorperazine and Serzone.  The nausea is so bad, I'm unable to function without them.  My husband and I want to have children.  Are either of these "safe" to use during pregnancy?  What tests have been done on them in regards to pregnancy?

Rebecca,

Prochloperazine(Compazine) and Serzone are both classified as pregnancy category C.  This means that safety is uncertain; no human studies have been completed but some animal research sow an adverse effect.  I suggest that you discuss these issues further with your personal physician so that the risks and benefits of not taking medications during pregnancy can be spelled out.  Sometimes medications are necessary during pregnancy.  I also recommend that you see a gastroenterologist regarding chronic nausea.
