Metabolism and weight loss after SSRI cessation

Dr. Gould,

First, it is a profound relief to have access (even if it is virtual) to a doctor familiar with these issues.  My psych is utterly clueless.  So, thank you.

My situation:  I was put on Effexor 225mg five years ago.  I gained 40 pounds and reduced dosage to 75 mg. I still could not lose weight and was switched to Celexa (with the assurance weight gain would not be an issue).  I still could not lose the weight, so I tapered myself off the Celexa.

I have not taken any meds (not even a vitamin) for 30 days.  I do daily rigorous exercise and eat five small, extremely healthy meals per day.  In two months (one month on the pills, one month off) I have not lost a single pound. (I'm an otherwise healthy 37 year old man.)

Will I ever recover my metabolism?  Will my system ever return to its pre-SSRI state?  If so, is there anything I can do to speed this recovery so that I can lose the extra 40 lbs I'm carrying around?

the chemical effect on your metabolism should be finished around now, and there is a lag time of about three weeks of water retention before your healthy diet and exercise will kick in.  I suggest you continue on your regime for now, and assure you that you will see results, but for permanent weight loss you will have to sure not to become or stay a stress ( emotional) eater.  My book, and online program, is the best insurance you can get to end the weight issues...go to www.shrinkyourself.com

That's hysterical, Tanns.  That's exactly what I did do: I called a pharmacist, my father!  And you're right, they do know much more about meds than doctors.  You know what he said?

"Who knows?"

Yup.  Unflattering research on these meds is rare, go figure.  And doctors believe the pharmaceutical company insert 9 times out of 10 over their patients' experience.

I do feel a lot better knowing that it's just "water weight".  Not. Can't believe Gould had the nerve to write that.  I guess he had to add some filler around the ad for his book.

And this is not water retention.

I don't know if this will help or not but try calling your pharmacist.  My pharmacist is a neighbor and he has been a life saver for me during some pretty rough times.  When I was put on Lexapro I had some horrible symptoms at first and my doc was clueless too.  My pharmacist was SO knowledgable and helpful.  They may not prescribe it but I can almost guarantee they hear more about side effects and problems than the docs do.  If you don't have one you use regularly, call a Walgreens or big chain and talk to one.  Just don't call on Mondays!!  They are always so busy and may not answer what you need.  I have found them to be more helpful than my doc.

Good luck to you.
