My first time!

I have an appointment to see a psychologist for the first time in a couple of days. (To help me deal with a lot of anxiety,a little depression, intrusive thoughts and self-harming tendencies.) I've never seen a psychiatrist or a psychologist and I'm pretty nervous about it. When can I expect a first visit to be like? I'm only 21 and never imagined I would ever get this 'crazy' for lack of a better word (hope I'm not insulting anyone...)to need professional mental help.

Anna-Lee,

        A psychiatric evaluation consists of a history taking process and a mental status exam.  The impression of your condition will then be discussed as well as a treatment plan.  Its as simple as that.  Please ask questions if you are not clear about any issues as this is very helpful to your treatment.  I hope this diminished your anxiety about your appointment.  Remember the purpose of the visit is to help you.  Good luck.

Anne Lee; I have been going to different psychologist for most of my talking years. I am 23, and still see one. I have had some realy bad ones. But if you search and find the one that is right for you it will help you greatly. I did live in the big city, but moved to the way back red neck land, where if you see a psychologist there must be something wrong with you and you are crazy, But I relized that it is fun sometimes to have people think I am crazy, cause I just sit back and laugh at them and say to myself " and I am the one getting help" Do not be afraid, just be sure to look at there history (any doctor) Better buisness. Do not give up if the first one is not right. But when you find the one that is right for you, be honest!!! to that person and youself.
