Nursing and St. Johns Wort

I was wondering if it is ok to take St. Johns Wort while nursing my 11 month old son?

Jennifer,

St.Johns wort, an herbal over the counter medication/supplement, is not regulated the same way
as prescription medication.  Given this you can understand that much less information is available regarding its safety and
efficacy. After conducting a search on the internet and discussion with a Henry Ford pharmacist, I was unable to discover any information related to St. Johns wort and nursing.
I can not recommend you take St. Johns wort while nursing
without having more information.  There is a Physician Desk Reference of herbal medicines/supplements that you may consult.
You might also discuss this with your pediatrician. It is also
unclear why you desire to take this supplement.  If the goal is
the treatment of depression there are treatments with proven efficacy and safety. Hope this was helpful.
Remember this information is intended for general educational purposes only.  Please consult your physician for
specific health concerns.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
