PTS and Zolpidem

JBU
My daughter is having horrible side effects with her Zolpidem. She is suffering from post tramatic stress and has very real nightmares. It takes several hours for her realize they are dreams. She is sleep/wake having conversations she doesnt remember and and having conversations with us that did not happen, Sleep walking, cleaning.... Is this common and should Ambien be prescribed to teens with PTS?

This kind of reaction has been reported with Ambien, and usually it is recommended the ambien be stopped and another medication used...you should ask your doctor to do that.

PTSD is a very complicated disorder.  Some symptoms that I experience are similar to some of your daughter.  As a teen, she has the added complication of hormones added to the chemical mix.  I don't know the severity of the trauma, but I know nightmares do feel very real.  I would suggest speaking to your doctor and/or psychiatrist about the situation.  There are other ways to address this problem without the Ambien.  I am going to assume that the medication was prescribed by a GP since I don't know of any specialist giving Ambien to a PTSD sufferer.
