Prozac-Fastin

Could I take Prozac and Fastin together?

Barb,

The Physicians' Desk reference does not list any contraindication to taking Prozac and Fastin together. Please discuss your concern further with your treating and/or prescribing physician.

Did the same doctor prescribe both medications?  If so, he should have given you a list of warning signs to look for.  If you take the recommended dose of Fastin (used to suppress your appetite), there should be no problem, however, at higher doses, Fastin (phentermine) can inhibit MAO and increase levels of serotonin ... so theoretically there could be some pharmacodynamic interaction with Fastin and Prozac at high doses.  There is one article that documents a toxic reaction from combining Prozac and Fastin (in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology. 1996 Apr;16(2):189-90).  On the other hand, RB Rothman states that "neither [Fastin] alone, [Prosac] alone or their combined use have been associated with cardiac valvulopathy, and clinical experience has shown their combined use to be free of significant adverse effects." (Synapse 1999 May;32(2):141-5).
So there you go, hope that gives you some more info to make a decision.  However, I strongly recommend you print this out and discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist.
Take care,
NRO-Sx
