I am a 20 year old college student.  My girlfriend of a year and a half
recently broke up with me.  Of course, it hurt at first, and when
she started going out with someone else, I thought I'd deal with it
better.  However, I have been stressing out because she lives about
five doors away from me, and the guy she's going out with lives across
the hall from her.  Which makes me even more nervous.
This is my question, though:  After she broke up with me, I've experienced
recurring back and chest pains.  Sometimes, the chest pain is so strong that
I can't do anything but lie in bed, helpless.  Sometimes it even
feels like I have a fever, but my body temperature remains normal.
Should I regard this as just stress?  Or should I contact a physician
immediately?
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Dear  Mighell  P,
I am sorry that your girl friend broke up with you. I agree that this is a stressful situation. Stress can cause  physical symptoms . Chest pain can be one of those symptoms. It is very important that you get evaluated by your  physician  first, to ensure there are no  physical causes. Grieving the loss of someone takes time, but usually heals.
If your symptoms  persist or affect your social and occupational functioning ,  it may be helpful  to contact a Mental Health Professional for a comprehensive evaluation. For a confidential evaluation you can  call  Henry Ford Hospital Behavioral Services Clinic at (313)-874-6680.
I hope this information is helpful to you. This information is provided for general medical educational purposes only and should not be replaced by evaluation with a physician.  Good Luck to you.
