Forum: The Mental Health Forum

I have suffered from obsessive thoughts and generalized anxiety in the past.  The last bout was approximately 3 years ago. I have recently had a 1)marital problems, 2)husband's unknown illness being pursued, 3)job change and began the symptoms again.  They waned after a few days.  I am in therapy.  I also know that I do NOT want to ever go back to the mess I was 3 years ago.  With that in mind,I have a few questions I am hoping you might address.
1)What is anxiety disorder?  Is it chronic or episodic, or both?
2)What are your views on the use of arsenicum or other homeopathic treatments for anxiety?
3)What are the side effects associated with the use of Luvox?  Is weight gain one of them?
4)Is it possible to be OCD if only experiencing the obsessive thinking and no compulsive actions to reduce stress.
Thanks.

I just want to say it was amazing to read your post.  I could have written it myself.  You see, I also have suffered from general anxiety and obsessive thoughts in the past (my last bouts were five years ago and then about a year and a half ago), and have recently noticed a return of the symptoms because of severe marital problems.  Actually, I'm getting a divorce and it's final next week.  Last week it hit me just how close the date is, and suddenly anxiety and irrational obsessive thoughts have worked their way into me again.  I taught myself how to deal with the obsessions and have successfully supressed them most of the time, but sometimes they just slip in there, you know?  I've never received formal therapy for OCD, but I hope to see a therapist soon to help with this stressful time in my life.
Anyway, while I don't have any direct anwers to your specific questions, I just want you to know that you are not alone and I myself feel some relief that someone else understands these types of anxieties.  In answer to one of your questions, I do think obsessive thoughts alone are considered OCD because in all the research I did when I suspected myself of having it, obsessive thoughts do not have to be combined with compulsions to be diagnosed as such.  I think they are just classified together because they often go hand in hand, but I too suffer from obssessive thoughts alone with no compulsions.
Hang in there and good luck.
Allison
