Serzone

I recently had an episode of sinus bradycardia where my heart rate was down to as low as 38.  The doctor said it was my stomach and not my heart.  I was hospitalized for 24 hours with a low rate and low blood pressure.
I take 300 mg of serzone at bedtime for sleep disturbance, depression and irritable bowel symptoms.  I read that serzone can cause bradycardia.  Can it cause a sudden attack?  Should i go off the serzone?  I have been on serzone for many months and it is effective.
My doctor has not tested any G.I symptoms; I am always told it is due to stress and depression.  Could GI problems cause bradycardia even if it is in my lower intestinal track and not my stomach?
Thank you for your time and consideration of my questions.

Dear Lynn

Serzone (Nefazodone) is a medication that was shown to be effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety. It is also used for management of some types of chronic pain, obsessive compulsive disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. The side effects are dose dependent and appear at a dose range of 300  mg to 600 mg a day. The most common reasons for discontinuation of Serzone are nausea, dizziness, insomnia and agitation. Sinus bradycardia was seen in about 1. 5 percent of Serzone treated patients. Reports in marketing trails showed that 5.1 percent of patients taking Serzone experienced a significant drop in blood pressure. Serzone, therefore is used cautiously in patients with heart problems, stroke and dehydration.
Gastrointestinal problems that cause significant dehydration can cause bradycardia. I would recommend you to consult your physician for a thorough evaluation prior to discontinuing Serzone.
