Sexual behavior

My son is 19 years old.  He suffered a severe head injury at age 15.  He had been depressed prior to accident but behavior was not abnormal.  Since the injury behavior has changed.  Severe mood swings, personality changes, etc.  Under stress he becomes completely disoriented and has been found miles from home unaware of how he has gotten where he is or why.  He was diagnosed with severe recurrent depression, unspecified personality disorder and a minor learning disability.  He refuses all medications and therapies.  He currently lives alone, has little contact with others and has been unable to hold a job.  He has had girlfriends in the past but has not been able to sustain a relationship.  He has 15-20 pornographic magazines (all non violent) and 10-15 videos.  He uses chat rooms and telephone call lines all of sexual nature.  Is this behavior part of his illness?  Should I as his care giver be concerned about this and what should I be aware of to notice escalating or changing behavior that might become a concern?  Am I over reacting considering his age?

Dear Debbie,

It must be difficult taking care of a 19 y.o. with a head injury.

You have brought up many concerns. Your son's disoreintation when stressed, personality changes and interest in pornography.

Since your son is is an adult, guardianship issues should be considered, inorder to provide the best treatment.

It is difficult to assess whether his interest in pornography is an obssession, or normal adolescent behavior without a complete history and physical.

I recommend you discuss your concerns with your son's physician.

Best Wishes to you and your son.
