Side Effexor

My doctor prescribed Effexor for me three weeks ago for treatment of major depression and anxiety.  During the first 2 weeks, I experienced many undesirable side affects such as nausea, loss of appetite, headaches, jitteriness, muscle jerks, chattering teeth, constipation, confusion, hyperness, difficulty having an orgasm, and hot flashes that seemed to last 30-60 min.  The Effexor has lessened the anxiety and anxiety attacks fairly well, and has helped my mood a little.  Now in my third week, most of the side effects have subsided except the muscle jerks, constipation, and difficulty/or inability to have an orgasm.  I am a 20 year old female with a wonderful love life, and the last side effect mentioned is very disturbing to me. Should I expect these nagging side affects to dissappear also, or should I seek another medication?  Thanks for your help!

Michelle,
I've been on Effexor for about a year now.  It's really made a great difference.  But I also could not perform sexually as prior to the Effexor.  My Dr. prescribed 75mg Wellbutrin a day along with my usual 75 mg Effexor XR.  I 've been on this now for three weeks.  It has helped--not 100%, but any help is good.  Expect to go through the muscle jerks again; they're not really a problem though.

Michelle,

It is unfortunate that even though Effexor has been helpful in treating your anxiety and depression, it is causing intolerable side effects. It is difficult to tell if these side effects will go away or not. The dose of Effexor may be reduced, or another medication such as Wellbutrin can be added to diminish sexual side effects. Alternative medications with lower risks of sexual side effects (such as Serzone, Remeron, or Wellbutrin) may also be considered. I urge you to discuss your concerns further with your treating physician/psychiatrist.
