What can I take ?

What can I take ?

I think I have major depression and some kind of anxiety disorder. I feel like I'm going crazy. But I cannot afford to go to the doctor, and we make just a little too much for any kind of free or less costly help. My situation sounds a lot like carl's
is with his wife. My symptons are ; Every day now at one time or another I feel like I'm going to explode but I rarely unleash it on anyone I just try and get away to myself, I can't think straight ,sometimes I can only remember bits and pieces of whats happened, I cry and I don't know why every day, decisions are getting harder and harder to make, I have trouble sleeping or I sleep too much, I don't have much of an appetite when I do eat I feel sick and vomit about half the time. Loud noises bother me,
I tried to commit suicide but chickened out and went to the hospital after I took the pills, just told them it was an accident. I asked my husband to please help me and he said he wanted to but he didn't know what to do, he asked me what he should do but I didn't know what to tell him.
There are over the counter drugs that I can try now untill I can get some proffesional help such as st.johns wort, and Kava-Kava.
Can I take both of these at the same time and how much should I start with?? I really don't want to die I just want to feel like living.

NAC,

You relate a mood problem which probably represents a Major depression.  I can not recommend St. Johns Wort or Kava kava because they have not been studied and regulated like conventional antidepressants which have proven efficacy.  Another issue is that these herbal medications can be expensive.  Many pharmaceutical companies have programs that assist those in financial need.  Also the older antidepressants such as Pamelor are very inexpensive in the generic form and are very effective in treating depression.  Depression is a very costly problem if left untreated due to lost productivity/work.  It would be best for you in the long run to discuss these issues with your primary care physician or someone from community mental health to assist you in getting started with your treatment.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
