are meds making me crazy???

are meds making me crazy???

I'm a nineteen year-old-girl and I've been taking 20mg paroxetine per day for around 2 months, to treat what my doctor thinks is depression.
I have a history of depression, hyperactivity and anorexia.
Since I've been on the meds, my mood has generally improved, except for a few crying fits. the thing is, now I'm experiencing some new symptoms.
A lot of the time it feels like I am not controlling what I'm saying, a similar feeling to when you are almost asleep, and you're saying things, and you're aware that your talking, and that what you're saying doesn't make sense, but you can't stop talking. Also I have been hyperactive for periods of about 3-4 hours at a time, I get the most awful headrushes (feeling faint after i stand up), and I have been very irritable. For a day I was quite aggressive, something completely out of character, so much so that a lot of people noticed.
I have also had returning urges to injure myself (something i used to do whilst anorexic), starve myself, and i have had suicidal thoughts, but not in a depressive way (if that makes sense).
I occasionally have 'tantrums' and get very, uncontrollably upset over trivial things.
For a short period of time I thought seriously that I would quite like to be a serial killer. This, again, is ridiculously out of character.
I sleep up to 14 hours a day, and am groggy all day. My reactions are alternately faster than normal and slower than normal.
My family and friends are quite worried. I am under the care of a doctor, and have an appointment with a psychiatrist soon, but would just like to know if you could shed any light on my sypmtoms. Could all this be because of my meds?

The symptoms you describe could be due to different psychiatric conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Evaluation by a psychiatrist will be helpful in clarifying your diagnosis, which will in turn dictate proper treatment. Paroxetine (Paxil) may cause sedation, but it is unlikely that all your symptoms are due to the medication - you report a history of most symptoms prior to treatment with the medication.

Sounds like you need a new kind of medication and definately a visit to a psychiatrist!

katy - you may want to check a web site out - go to the search line on your pc and punch in PAXIL WITHDRAWAL.  There are a bunch of messages on there from people who have taken paxil and have had weird things happen.  You are not alone - that in itself should help.  Try this web site and see if you can find someone who has had similiar symptoms - many strange things happen on paxil.  And yeah - I agree with Barbara - you need to tell your doc you need an appointment pronto - don't let the doc put you off.  Good luck!
