boderline personality disorder

I recently found out I was given a diagnosis of boderline personality disorder.  I guess my question is likely does an individual beat this diorder and what are the long term effects.  Also how does one deal with this on a daily basis?

Borderline Personality Disorder is a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image and affects and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood.  Persons may feel real or imagined abandonment, have unstable interpersonal relationships, suffer from poor self-image, feel chronically empty and be inappropriately angry and impulsive.  Regarding its natural history, the disorder is fairly stable in that patients with borderline personality may change little over time.  Longitudinal studies do not show a progression toward Schizophrenia, but patients do have a high incidence of depressive disorders.
There are several methods of treatment now used to help patients with Borderline Personality Disorder including psychotherapy and medication.  Psychotherapy has been the treatment of choice and behavior therapy and social skills training can be helpful in contolling impulses and outbursts as well as improving interpersonal behavior.  Techniques learned in therapy can be employed by the patient to improve their functioning on a day-to-day basis.  Pharmacotherapy is also used to deal with specific symptoms that interfere with overall functioning.  For further information, see Sara, 2/9/99.
I would recommend that you see a mental health professional who can discuss the most appropriate treatment with you.  If you would like to see a mental health professional at Henry Ford Hospital, call 1-313-874-6680 for an appointment.  I hope that this information has been helpful for you.  It is for educational purposes only and should not replace consultation with your physician.
