psycotic depression

HI
My sister is 39 yrs old from last 2 yrs she has been into medidation vigrously ,after which she started to become very reserved not talking much, about six months while she was in medidation camp she felt she was spirtually connected to man(the man was real but i dont think he loved her , she is married and with 2 kids 16 and 14 )she was ready to leave husband  and kids .she felt there were messages being sent on the TV or email never went to doctor
she has always been stressed with her husbands family (as husband always takes side of his family and may  have hit her once or twice)about 1 week ago she was crying almost 2 days and was saying  she wanted to break up with husband she has not been happy for last 17 yrs, she was hearing voices, guilty thoughts  and delusional .is admitted to hospital was started on seraquel (caused drowisness )changed to risperidol and prozac.she is still very depressed .on anti depressents and anti pscyotics only for 1 week she feels negative thoughts are  gone ,not talking much with flat effect
doctor is considering ECT next week if she does not get any better
is it too early for it ?
can we wait 2-3 weeks more to see if antidepressants help  her or switch to something else
will ect help if not what then ?

In general I would agree with you that waiting for the medication to work is the better option, but if there is any question, you can always ask for another independent psychiatric consult, and then make up your mind, depending on what you hear.

I think you should tell her it is OK if she wants to leave her husband.  Tell her you will help her if that is her wish.

""May have hit her once or twice"", WHAT???  That is not a casual comment I hope.  She is living in an abusive relationship.  I feel for her.  She should not be forced to stay.

My friend was in and out of the mental hospital, through intensive therapy she admitted that she wanted to leave her husband.  This was a release for her and she is doing really well now and going through a difficult divorce, but she would never go back.

Help her to make her own choices.
