urination problem

urination problem

I have a phobia about urinating in public restrooms, when others are also using the same restroom.  This problem has persisted for some time.  I have no known medical conditions causing this problem.  When this occurs, I simply can't urinate.  Can you give me any answers or suggestions.

This is a fairly common phobia since most of us were taught to be ashamed, or at least shy, about bathroom activities.  Since early learning has persisted with you, and is a connection to the issue of shame in your household.  The best advice I can give you is to see a therapist and work out the meaning of this so you can go beyond it and live with a more mature and realistic sense of the bodily functions.

Its also possible that this same symptom serves another symbolic purpose in your life today...that is worth exploring.

This disorder is known by several names: avoidant paruresis (AP), psychogenic urinary retention and most commonly, shy or bashful bladder. AP has been linked with social anxiety disorder and some studies show that perhaps 7-10% of Americans have some form of this disorder.

There is an organization dedicated to paruresis called the International Paruresis Association and their website is www.paruresis.org. There is much helpful information on the treatment of AP along with support groups and a very active message board.
