what should i do???

Hello everyone,

School just started back last week & my daughter is having trouble staying in school. she went to a couple classes then walked out. she said she can't handle being around people her own age. it makes her very uncomfortable b/c she's depressed as it is when she's not around alot of people. she went 2 school the next day & talked w/her principal & counselor. they agreed hometutoring would be best for her at this time b/c they know she really wants her diploma, but the problem is, her dr. won't sign the form b/c he said he's not treating her for anxiety. he wants her to see a physiciatrist.(spelling???) do u think she should see one?  THANX!!!    Jean

hello
listen to the doctor-don't presume or assume anything and let a qualified therapist evaluate your daughter's situation. many well meaning people offer advise they really think is correct based on their own experiences and do damage.

Yes, she should definitely see a therapist for consultation, and a psychiatrist if medications are being considered.

Hello.  I know exactly how your daughter feels.  I was the same way in high school... which would be.... almost 4 years ago.  To me, and by know means am I a doctor, but it sounds like social anxiety disorder, and maybe a little depression, but it doesn't sound like it's the dominant illness.  My advice is to switch doctors.  A Psychiarist is mainly used for prescribing medications.  If your daughter can stay away from having to start medication, I would reccommend it.  I would first see a Psychologist, which is a doctor who handles the emotional obsticles and works with their patient to overcome their fears and/or concerns.  A councellor really doesn't have the proper training to help your daughter through these rough times.  Also, a Psychologist is not licensed to write prescriptions, thats why they usually work with a Psychiarist to help their patient.  Also, your family doctor is not trained or highly knowledged to treat mental illnesses.  If at all possible, try to keep your daughter away from these medications unless it is needed.  Thats why I feel as though a Psychologist would be the best first step in helping your daughter.  I can not emphasize how important it is not to take medication if it isn't needed.  Where I live, some Psychiarists and/or Doctors hand out anti-depressants and other medications like candy.  You really have to find out all the info you can about her illness.  This was the first step in helping your daughter and I am so happy to see a mother going to great extent for her child.  We are all not blessed with such parents.  Good Luck and Take Care :)
