ADHD/ODD/IEO Asperger

Does strattera and abilify changes the kids personality... When I don't give my child the medication he seems much happier, he smiles more, he laughs and he is able to socialize with other kids.......    When he takes his meds, he always so serious......   When I try not giving it to him, like I said he was happy but then  when he got upset he got upset quicker and kick the chair and shows more displeasure....

Yes it is very frustrating and I just want him to have a normal childhood and enjoy it... To see him smiling and actually interacting with other kids melts my heart, because he is a good kid.....  But during these trials its hard because at times he has gotten violent with some of the meds, other parents see it and then don't want their kids with him, which I understand.... But it hard to go through those time, until they find him the right balance and cure.....

The problem is that the doctors just don't know. The mind is so complex. These meds for children as well as adults are all trial and error. It's common to keep trying different meds and or med combinations until you find one that works with little to no side effects. Unfortunately that's how it works. The only other alternative that I know of is trying a naturopath (Dr.) and a nutritionist which is the route I had to take for my son who has ADHD. I wish you and your son well. Just remember to be patient, resourceful and don't give up finding what works for your son.

He has been taking medications since he has been in 3rd grade , he is now in 6th grade, and we been through a few medication already.....   I just like to seem him happy and smiling for a change...   And it seem like some of these doctors are clueless and just like to constantly jump from one thing to another and not hearing what you are saying

Thank you,  he has been tested for allergy... He has also had an MRI of the brain, etc....  He has been on medications since he was in 3rd grade,  being through 2 stimulants that made him very violent... Respideral may he sleep all day and gain weight... Strattera seems to work better but now he seems to be a little more hyper and his reaction time a little slower.... We do go back in 2 weeks to a new doctor.... I'm just afraid to put him on new meds because I don't know how he is going to react.... But that one day that I did not give him his meds in the morning, his reaction time was better however his emotions and anger, frustration level was quick to get upset....  But like I said it was nice to see him smile and having conversations with his friends....  It breaks my heart

To answer your question, In my opinion, Yes the meds can change your child's personality especially if the dosages are not right. The personality is still within him but does not show out due to med issues.  Work with your dr on the dosages and if you need to make any changes. It may take some time but when you and the dr find the right med/meds and dosages I think you will see his personality back. Keep in mind that certain foods, dyes and preservatives can make the ADHD worse. You can also look up the Feingold Diet. Sometimes if there are these kinds of issues the meds won't work as well. They are basically competing against one another. If you can, I would have your son allergy tested as well. Allergies can have a grave effect on ADHD and ADD.

Welcome to MedHelp MD J.
Are you the prescribing Doctor?
If not, how are these medications to be dosed to your child?
Did you receive samples to use as experiments on your child?
This is serious. Please let us know. Thank you. Pamela
