Antidepressant and Unresolved Symptoms with Extreme Weight Gain

by SarahCon, May 18, 2007 12:00AM
I have been on Anti-Depressants since I was 9. I go up and down a lot but I'm mostly very depressed and find it hard to function. Now I'm 18 and I feel even worse than when I was 9. I am always crying, angry, lashing out and exhibiting irrational behavior because of the smallest things. I started out on Paxil when I was 9 and got very sick from it, my doctor changed me to Celexa and then eventually to Lexapro. Just two weeks ago my medication was changed to Zoloft because Lexapro no longer was working. And now even with the change of medication I feel the worst I've ever been, I often think of suicide.

When I was 16 I was 110 pounds at 5 feet tall and now I'm 160. I have not changed my eating habits since or during the weight gain, it seems like the 50 pounds piled on in a flash. After a thyroid test I was told that my thyroid is quite sluggish and my doctor wouldn't recommend medication because I'm on Mircette daily and Phenergan, and Butal as needed.

It seems that Anti-Depressants no longer work for me and are doing more negative then good. Is there any other solution to depression that doesn't require medication? Or is there any medication that could at least make a dent on easing my depression?

I have a question for you, have you ever been screened for bi-polar? Sometimes you will be having these mood swings and lashing out episodes because you are bi-polar. There are different types of bi-polar. You might talk to your shrink about it. Shrinks make mistakes too, they go off what we tell them alot. If your most prominant symptoms are not being told to your shrink they may misdiagnose your depression. You could have a bi-polar disease. Anger and mood swings are not just depression only symptoms. Also I have taken alot of depression meds and yes they cause weight gain. I understand, cause I gained like 40pounds in two years from meds. I took , paxil, zoloft, prozac, lithium, depakote, they all cause weight gain. Especially if you are changing around your meds, also you will go through horrible mood swings when you are changing meds. Your shrink should have told you that. A friend of mine would just check herself into the hospital in the psych ward when she had to change her meds so she wouldnt take out so much on her kids and husband. My friend is also a registered nurse. She said that there was like three other nurses in with her. They were changing meds too. So don't feel alone, med changes are hell. talk to your shrink and good luck.

If your thyroid is 'sluggish', this could be the cause/worsen your depression and weight gain issues.
