Any recomondation for sports/hobby or music/movies against depression?

I have been suffering from depression for the last 6 years, and having quit smoking i cant seem to find something to occupy my mind when i am depressed... Can anyone recommend anything they found useful? (or heard about it). Any suggestion would be lovely. Thank you in advance.

Hi Jane,

I'm like you. I believe exercise would be good for me but I cannot, or probably will not , force myself to do something I do not want to do. And find boring. Played sports as a kid and that was great but exercise for depressed people is usually solitary else we wouldn't be depressed in the first place, right?

Imagine a team of footballers all severely depressed. Every week when selctions are made a number would become suicidal for missing out and many others would either forget to turn up or just couldn't get out of bed!!

No, I wish I could exercise but my mind and body says no so I no longer feel it's a need and just laugh at those that tell me it's the way to go. So I sympathise greatly with you and hope you too can simply reject the idea until that day when we have energy again and want to get up and go. Being BP2 I do get those times, rarely but when they do I don't stop.

In truth though the real value in doing anything is to divert the thoughts from the negative usual stuff to anything else. If walking or jogging does that, great. Anything that can change that pattern is the go as I see it!

Respectfully,

The Sloth

I jog, but I found that even walking and listening to my iPod are a great way to not only get exercise but enjoy yourself.  Get some funny stories or Podcasts or books on tape and listen to them.  You will laugh and get exercise.  What could be better?

Hello Guy.

I have heard many times that physical activity is meant to help people that feel down and for most people this works. However I find it hard to do this as I never have the motivation to do it in the first place and when I have done it it has made me feel worse. I guess everyone is different, well we all know that.

If you are the kind of person that finds it hard to find the motivation to do anything in the first place.. I suggest you use your time on this site and open a document at the same time and take to writing anything. Or search the net for sports near you.

When I feel down listening to jazz or even the blues or Ska music liftd my mood. I just find it hard to keep frowning through all the trumpet and horn lines lol

Dancing is good to release depression.  Turn on some music and dance.  Take some classes and release tension and make new friends.

Hi Guy,

Really anything that diverts your attention from the negative patterns of thought is a good thing. Physical activity is good, I am told, but I cannot do it. Or simply won't. I find walking so boring I hate the thought. Exercise bike inside the house? Hated it. Swimming was good but I had to find times when the place wasn't full of schoolkids etc. But by far my most enjoyable simply because I felt free, the water removed the stress of exercise and pain from feet etc.

Reading if you can manage it but the biggest thing I have found is writing. I started years ago writing on forums like this, simply because I was one sufferer amongst so many. I initially looked for help, advice and more, and always got that. Over time I bacame more stable and less in need of help myself but stayed on these forums for two reasons. One is I like the freedom you all give me to speak and when I do give someone something helpful it makes me feel just great.

One of my life ambitions these days is simply to try and recue the time anyone spends in Dland. If I can shorten their stay with a few words then I'll do it.

So I write, a lot. I expanded to blogs, political ones where the gloves are off and that changed my ability to accept full on attacks and survive.

Overall thought he thing that finally emerged is me writing for myself. A book. A novel, fiction. About 2/3rds finished so far and maybe by years end it will be. I write for me so it will be a success. It will also be published. By me if necessary so others will see it in time.

So I recommend writing. Obviously!!!!

Good luck.

Joe Dirt, Dumb & Dumber, My Cousin Vinney, Malibu's Most Wnted & Uncle Buck.  These movies are sure to lift you sprits...at least a little while.  You'll notice that these movies are the kind where you can just turn your brain off and relax.

Hobbies or activities that involve physical activity are good because they burn off tension if you have agitated depression or accompanying anxiety, they increase energy if you are feeling sluggish or "druggie-headed," and if you exercise enough, you can get a release of endorphins which will help elevate your mood a bit.

Yeah, I realize that it may not sound AT ALL appealing when you're depressed, but see if you can  force yourself to try at least a little exercise--even walking around the block. If you're crawling out of your skin due to not smoking, try putting on some music and dancing around the house, Wii Fit, swimming laps,  punching a punching bag.

Best wishes...

I like to go fishing it takes my mind off things and even my condition for awhile.

When I get really depressed I will pop in that Bill Murray movie called "What about Bob"
LOL! I could be feeling suicidal, but if I watch that movie I laugh everytime.

The Psychiatrist that's played my Richard Dryfis reminds me of my Psychiatrist.
I like when he tries to give Bob Death Therapy.
