Can nightmares symbolize degradation of mental health?

Hello, I am a 24 year old male who has been diagnosed with moderate-severe depression before I lost my health insurance.  I have had troubles with mental health for the past couple of years, but only recently was diagnosed.  Lately for a little over a month now I have been having severe and very frightening nightmares concerning suicidal, and homicidal events.  Sometimes the nightmares are extraordinarily vivid while other times they are vague; while also some of the nightmares seem supernatural involving werewolves, or vampires, or just some unnatural beast whether as myself slaughtering others or being slaughtered.  Lately I feel these nightmares taking a large effect on my mind weighing heavily on me.  My question is could these nightmares signify that the state of my mental health is damaged or becoming damaged?  I would be going to a therapist still if I had mental health insurance, also if anyone could suggest a program that could possibly help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

No, your state of mind is not becoming damaged by your dreams.  We sleep mainly to allow our brains to "re-group" and this is why dreams rarely make sense to us. Your anxiety may be causing the dreams and the creatures represent your fears, and your mind is clearing out all of this when you dream.  I once had a Neurologist tell me that in med school if they didn't dream, they felt they weren't rested!  This shows the importance of our brain "cleaning house" while we sleep.  There are many excellent generic antidepressants where you can get a month's supply for 8$ - $10. you may want to look into this, I take one.  There are also clinics in your area that charge according to your income.  Some psychiatrist will give you samples for months at a time.  Find a way to get some help so you can feel better.  Take care.
