Depression, headaches, lack of interest and memory lapses..

I am a student doing my A levels and have been really disturbed for over a year or so. I have very frequent headaches (at least thrice a week) and it usually occurs from the base of my neck to both sides of my head. Sometimes these headaches last for hours and I try to relieve them by going to sleep. I feel like a totally different person from who I used to be, because I have no interest in doing things that I used to enjoy doing. In fact I don't find pleasure in doing anything. Nothing seems to excite or pleasure me anymore. It also seems that sleeping is the only thing that I do in my free time and it seems to be the only thing I do obligingly. Frequent nightmares do not deter me from going to sleep. I can't concentrate in classes at all, and all that I do is stare into space and lose myself in my thoughts and fantasies where life is more interesting. I feel so worthless because I cannot remember even the most recent things that have happened in my life. I can't even remember what happened in the last few days... not even a general picture. I feel like a sloth because I can't seem to complete my assignments no matter how much time I put into it, and I find it increasingly hard to absorb new concepts and knowledge. The worst thing is that I can't tell my friends or show them how troubled or sad I feel because the last thing I want is to end up alone in school. I fear they would despise or detest me if I continually harped on my pain, because they had in the past complained about others who did so.

I know my problems probably don't amount much as compared to some of yours... but I'm really confused because things have gotten worse recently. Did my headaches cause me to feel depressed... or is it the other way round?

Only a doctor can answer that....but it sounds like what you are describing is depression.  See a doctor as soon as possible so they can run some tests to rule out any physical problems for the headaches and so you can get treatment for the headaches and the depression.

I am bipolar and used to suffer frequent headaches.  After seeing a neurologist to rule everything out, he treated my headaches with Topomax (topamax) and now they are much better.  Not gone completely, but much better.
