Depression meds

I am sixteen years old and I have heard that a lot of depression medications can cause suicidal side effects. So,my question is,Are there any medications that have a low suicide side effect rate?

Well, all SSRIs have the risk of making you feel slightly worse before you feel better.  You simply have to be aware that this is a real risk. If you feel worse you need to let your Dr know. It's not in your head, it's a real side effect.
If you're in the US, I think Prozac is the only FDA approved medication to give to children (under 18). I don't know that Drs always follow that rule though. Maybe someone else on here knows?

Hi,

This sort of "information" is mainly media hype.

Yes some A/D's can cause suicidal thoughts as Becky says. Initially side effects may appear to be bad and hurtful and so you may feel worse.

Side effects such as dry mouth (very annoying), nausea (you just want to be sick, headaches, various aches and pains and similar may last for up to a couple of weeks for SOME meds. Most it's either nothing or only a few days and then settles down.

Any time you feel suicidal, have suicidal thoughts or think of suiciding whilst under treatment and on prescribed meds you should immediately conact your doctor. That way it is controlled. If you just keep it to yourself it can get on top of you and dominate.

The thing to really understand with this is it is just thoughts. Thoughts, not instructions or orders. Do you understand? It's your brain saying"Enough of this, I want out" and it can only see one solution. The truth is a few more days and most of that stuff will go away and your mind will relax.

These thoughts are only a problem if you think you have to deal with it on your own and that you must do what the thoughts imagine. You don't, you see your doctor.
